"And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 17Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18They immediately left their nets and followed Him." Mark 1:16-17 NKJV
One of the most obvious thoughts we have when we begin to follow Jesus, and have several tasks in the church, is that He wants us to pack in our job and become a vicar or pastor. Just because we have a task within a church, doesn't mean that He is calling us to go to bible college or work for the church. Many times, He can use you just where you are, in your own job. Take a look at these guys.
Simon, Andrew and the others, were skilful fishermen, so well-trained that they had their own, thriving business. But, here, Jesus sees them and calls them to follow Him and He will make them fishers of men. We must remember, that they still kept their boats and did occasional fishing to help with the bills, but their priority was serving Jesus. This is the difference, they were able to do this because they worked for themselves. It becomes more difficult when you are employed and working for another.
But know this, Jesus can use you in your job whatever that may be. You may be a plumber or you may be a policeman, social worker or even a hairdresser. He can still use you, if you are willing. It is how you present yourself. You may not last very long in your job, if you pick up a bible and start preaching to everyone. However, God can give you opportunities to witness for Him. I was a social worker and for the last 10 years of my career, I worked in a hospice, offering counsel to dying patients and their families, if they wanted this. I spent many hours serving these people and, in a way, it was almost like I was their pastor taking them on their last walk before they died. I was not a chaplain there, I was a social worker but, I knew that God had called me for this task and, I led many to Jesus, in my undercover role.
This is how God can use you also. You don't need to wear a dog collar to tell people about Jesus. You just need to be a good listener, open to the Holy Spirit's leading and let whoever you meet know you're a Christian. Look at it this way, you can become an under-cover plumber, painter and decorator, doctor or whatever else. I have seen many such as this.
What is your job? Jesus can use you in your job, whatever it is. It's almost as if He says, 'You have no idea what I can do with you and through you.' So, if you feel God is calling you to this type of work, ask Him to show you. Get into the excitement of it all.
If you don't know Jesus or, have fallen away, why not say this prayer right now
Lord Jesus, I have sinned. I ask you to forgive me and be my Lord and Saviour. Please come into my heart, fill me with Your Spirit and give me a brand new start today. In Jesus' Name. Amen
