"Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” Exodus 3:1-3. NKJV
One day, Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father in law, who was also the priest of Midian. As he led the sheep deep into the wilderness, he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of the bush. Notice two things here, firstly he went deep into the wilderness or desert, and secondly, he encountered God in a burning bush. Now, this suggests that if we are willing to go deeper into our relationship with God, reading and studying His Word, then we will reap the benefit of coming into contact of the fire of God. This is how God wants it, how about you?
Horeb, the mountain of God, is a place of prayer and devotion. A place of total surrender and wholehearted commitment to His work. Therefore, it was not by accident that Moses approached the mountain of God. When we approach God, things begin to happen and change.
Suddenly, a voice spoke from the bush that was not burning up at all. 'Moses, Moses, do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is Holy Ground.' v5. This appearance of God is called a Theophany - 'An appearance of God - to a human being. A divine manifestation. God had heard the cries of His people in Egypt and, He wanted a man to go and rescue them. Moses was this man
Moses was not all that delighted that God was calling him to do this, in fact, he began to flap about it. But God had called Moses to be the man to deliver His people out of Pharaoh's captivity. God knew Moses through and through. He knew his heart and despite his emotional ups and downs, and his periods of self-doubt, God would be able to use him to do great things. This should give all of us hope that God can also use us in amazing ways if we are yielded to Him.
In closing this piece today, let me remind you of going deeper with Jesus. If you do this, you will become closer to Him, you'll be soaked in His Spirit and you will be a force to be reckoned with. However, be prepared that God is looking for warriors such as this, so be prepared to be used by Him like you have never been used before.
More on Moses tomorrow
If you don't know Jesus or, have fallen away, why not say this prayer right now
Lord Jesus, I have sinned. I ask you to forgive me and be my Lord and Saviour. Please come into my heart, fill me with Your Spirit and give me a brand new start today. In Jesus' Name. Amen
